I've done this myself and it seems to have roughly doubled the standby time.

  • Turn the display brightness down a notch (Tools > Settings > Phone > Display > Light Sensor)
  • Turn down Tx Power Level (Tools > Settings > Connection > Wireless LAN > Options > Advanced Settings > TX Power Level)
  • Turn off 3G dual mode (Tools > Settings > Network > GSM)
Of course, you won't get a 3G connection if you do the last one.
